The best just got better. Since its introduction, the Maserati Quattroporte has been the sports sedan of choice for the discerning driver, combining a luxurious interior, stylish exterior, value and practicality with breathtaking performance and road holding. The 2009 Quattroporte takes it to the next level, with updated styling and suspension and the option of a new engine with even more power and torque.

It has been said that over the past few years the styling house Pininfarina seems to have been reserving their best work for Maserati; both the Quattroporte and GranTurismo were praised for being practical and exciting daily drivers clad in gorgeous Italian bodywork. For 2009, they have turned out another masterpiece, blending the best features of those two cars to create a fresh new look for the classic Italian sedan. The latest Quattroporte has gained a new front grille; featuring convex vertical slats, it shows a clear resemblance to the aggressive nose of the GranTurismo, but with a more formal effect. There are new bumpers front and rear, while side skirts also help improve the aerodynamics.

The exterior mirrors are now similar to those used on the GranTurismo, while new wheel designs are also used. In addition to the styling changes, both front and rear light clusters have been revised to make the most of new technology. Front turn indicators use ultra-bright LEDs, as do the rear lights – brighter and longer-lasting than conventional bulbs, they are also more energy efficient. The new Adaptive Light Control system allows the self-leveling Bi-Xenon headlights to turn in the same direction as the front wheels, an important safety feature on winding roads at night.

As part of the changes, Maserati has developed a new flagship – the Quattroporte S – and while the updated styling is the most obvious alteration, it is likely that the modification under the hood will get the most attention. The Quattroporte S comes with the new 4.7-liter V8 engine that debuted in the GranTurismo S, giving it more power and torque than any Quattroporte in history. 425 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque mean the Quattroporte S can hit 60mph in just 5.3 seconds, and reach a top speed of 174 mph – and its 4.2-liter stablemate is no slouch, clocking 5.5 seconds and 168 mph.

Stopping power is, if anything, even more important than top speed – and the Quattroporte S impresses. It uses cross-drilled rotors front and rear, with the front brakes using six-piston calipers and 14.2” dual-cast aluminum and steel rotors; this same set-up is used for the most sporting version of the GranTurismo, the GranTurismo S.

Inside the cabin, you will find all the fine craftsmanship and high-quality materials that are synonymous with Maserati – Poltrona Frau leathers and authentic wood veneers, chrome highlights and supremely responsive controls. The Quattroporte features the latest Bose Multi Media System, which combines a hi-fi audio system with satellite navigation and Bluetooth technology. The speedy 40GB hard disk holds full maps of North America, and the system will automatically rip an audio CD to the hard disk; it can also read CDs and DVDs containing MP3 files. Bluetooth, satellite radio, iPod compatibility and a USB port are standard, as is voice control.  A unique user interface, which calls up menus as your hand reaches for the dial, was pioneered for this system by Bose. Motor Trend called the new Bose system a “quantum improvement in ergonomics,” and AutoWeek found its operation “easier than the units the Germans offer in their sedans.”

Fine wood inside the Quattroporte

Maserati has long been renowned for the choices available – there are literally millions of possible combinations of exterior colors, wood trim, wheels and leather color. For 2009 two new wood trims have been added, Vavona and Polished Wengé, while Blue Lacque is available in addition to Piano Black. The range of leather colors also has two additions, Sabbia and Marrone Corniola, while Verde Deep Emerald is available as an exterior color, meaning you can now choose from no fewer than 19 different paint colors.

The press got an early taste of the 2009 Quattroporte at a special preview in Italy, and their reviews are glowing.  Road & Track called it “one of those special once-in-a-lifetime cars,” and Car and Driver declared “the Quattroporte is now regarded as one of the sportiest luxury sedans ever.”  AutoWeek was equally enthusiastic: “It’s rare, but every now and then, a car comes along that combines beauty, performance and a fine-handling chassis. This is one of those cars.”

The 2009 Quattroporte is arriving at authorized Maserati dealers now – contact your local dealer to organize a test drive and put yourself behind the wheel of the latest version of the Quattroporte and experience this “once-in-a-lifetime” car for yourself.
