Maserati: The Car is the Star
With Maserati, the Extra steals the scene

Maserati Quattroporte in major motion picture "Max Payne" starring Mark Wahlberg

Maserati cars have never been commonplace – despite a sales performance rivals would love to emulate in these strained times, seeing a Maserati on the road remains a rare treat. Yet paradoxically that same exclusivity, coupled with the desirable and exotic image of the Trident, makes Maserati a hot marque for TV and movie producers who wish to give their show some additional cachet and make their characters stand out.

The most famous recent shows to use the Modenese cars to spice up their plots were, of course, The Sopranos, Desperate Housewives and Entourage. Between them the three shows featured the Coupe, Spyder and Quattroporte. The latest season of HBO's megahit Entourage features Maserati's own megahit, the gorgeous new GranTurismo. Starting with the season five premier Maserati is again another powerful member of the ensemble cast of this extremely influential and popular series.

In addition to the veteran Entourage series, you can add four more TV shows to the list: The Starter Wife, Valentine, Lipstick Jungle and Life.

The Starter Wife is based on the novel by Gigi Levangie Grazer; originally it was an Emmy-award-winning miniseries, and garnered such rave reviews and success that the USA Network commissioned thirteen additional episodes. Debra Messing, famous for starring in Will and Grace, plays the main character, Molly; her ex-husband Kenny (played by David Alan Basche) drives a Quattroporte.

On the CW Network, Valentine is based on an intriguing premise: Greek gods are living among us, masquerading as mere mortals in order to ensure the course of true love runs smooth. In their temple on Mount Olympus (near Hollywood’s Laurel Canyon, in case you were wondering) the Oracle of Delphi shows the gods who a person’s true love is – and the terrible consequences if the gods do not make sure they meet and fall in love. So the gods descend to mingle with these people, and to keep romance alive. One of those gods is Danny Valentine, played by Kris Polaha; as the modern-day Eros, he is (to quote the series website) “all about the heat of the moment” – so driving a Maserati Quattroporte, a car which stirs the soul and raises passion like no other, fits in perfectly. The obvious comments about ‘heaven on earth’ are superfluous…

Lipstick Jungle is showing on NBC, based on the book by Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell. Starring Brooke Shields, the new show is also about powerful, entrancing women in New York – for which the 2009 Maserati Quattroporte is the ideal match.

If you are a homicide detective in a hurry there is no better choice than a Maserati, as Charlie Crews, played by Damian Lewis, shows in the NBC series Life.  As if a menacing black Quattroporte was not enough to part traffic, Detective Crews added a non-factory option to his car: flashing red and blue lights hidden behind the grille.

And finally, a Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S puts in an appearance in the hit film Max Payne, with Mark Wahlberg; Mila Kunis plays Mona Sax, the sexy assassin who accompanies Max on a hunt for villains. In one scene Mila arrives at her warehouse driving the most sporting version of the definitive sports sedan – a fitting mount for a fashionable assassin and showing the Quattroporte is a favorite for characters on both sides of the law.
